As I walk the streets of downtown MTL drinking my pumpkin spice latte and admiring the new orange and red leaves, the back to school nostalgia instantly hits me (despite having graduated from college years ago!). The need to have a warm drink in my hand while wearing my fav light coat and handbag just makes me feel like a different version of me- the more sophisticated version. This is one of the reasons why fall is my favourite. Though I have to admit, what I really love is saying goodbye to flip flops and tank tops and saying hello to layers and classic trends! I think we can all agree that fall is the classy b*tch of all seasons and will always have the best trends and styles.
As much as I follow runway and designers' predictions for the new “it” pieces or trending colours, I get most of my inspo from the 90’s (way before it was a trend), Pinterest and obviously Instagram. Before buying for any season I spend hours and hours on end stalking my favourite influencers, trying to imagine that if they would ever step into Valentina Boutique, what styles I should have in store that would make them wanna shop here?
Here are some of my personal favourite trends this fall and maybe your next purchase for this season:
This time last year (the famous covid pandemic), sweats were all anyone would buy. They had dethroned any other fall clothing pieces since people were either working from home or just didn't feel the need to dress up. But, styling up is back and taking its throne! Nowadays, a nice suit can be dressed down with sneakers (thank you Hailey Bieber!) and can be a great outfit for an after work 5 à 7. The blazer’s signature versatility means you can wear it for on-and-off duty looks, and a good pair of trousers can guarantee you several outfit rotations. These two pieces are timeless and perfect to create a capsule wardrobe.
We all have a pair of leather or suede over the knee boots, which will forever be a classic, but adding a cool trendy pair of boots that could upgrade your outfit is a must. After being in quarantine for so long, why not go out and make a statement? Think cowboy boots, metallic boots, or even a nice pair of white boots... Options are endless!
Nothing says fall quite like plaid. It’s a traditional pattern that can always be given some edge by pairing it with a silk outfit, faux fur jacket, or even some sequins to give it a modern touch. But, if you’re looking to play it safe, a simple plaid skirt with a turtleneck, or a plaid coat is still a popular option.
